Who We Are

Shafter Animal Control operates under the Shafter Police Department. The Animal Control Department has one officer who services Shafter. Services that are povided include: stray animal pick -up and control, bite investigations, rabies control, cruelty investigations, animal husbandry education, citizen complaints and adoptions. We are staffed with one full - time animal control officer and two part - time kennel attendants. Our shelter has 13 indoor/outdoor kennels and 9 cat cages. Our shelter is NOT a no kill facility but we try our best to find homes for our most adaptable animals. Our animals are picked up as strays, rescued from abusive homes or surrendered by their owners. We impound approximately 1,300 animals per year. Space and time is precious at our small shelter. Each adoptable animal is vying for their chance to find a loving home. Animals are taken in from Shafter city areas only. If you would like to know more about us or to make a donation to our shelter, please call the phone number below. We currently need cat/dog crates, medical / vet supplies,blankets and towels.

Adopting a friend

Dog adoptions are $75.00. This includes spay/neuter and rabies vaccination. Male cats are $20.00 and female cats are $30.00. (Exact cash only please!) Once the altering procedure and rabies vaccination are pre - paid, we will deliver the animal to the vet and they will contact you when your new addition is ready for pickup.

We are located in Shafter which is just north of Bakersfield, CA. Our shelter is just outside of the city limits of Shafter, off of South Shafter Avenue. From Hwy 99, take Lerdo Hwy exit, West 7 miles into Shafter. Stay on Lerdo across the tracks until you get to S. Shafter Avenue. Go South, or left approximately two miles. Once you pass Burbank St., our road is the very next road and you can only turn right. If you go to San Diego Rd. , turn around you have gone too far! Our shelter is a bright orange/pink color that you can't miss! Our new operation hours are Monday - Saturday from 7a.m. to 3 p.m, closed Sundays. Monday and Wednesday, visits to the shelter can be arranged by appointment between 3 p.m and 7 p.m. We are closed on federal holidays.
